Homemade Gifts: Market Bag

Mum Market Bag
UPDATE 2015: In an effort to consolidate and bring consistency to the location of my patterns, I am going to be moving the patterns here from Google Docs. They will still be up on Google Docs for a while, but traffic from Ravelry will be directed here. Thanks for understanding!

In the spirit of making Christmas presents, I thought I'd share a homemade gift idea:

Make a market bag gift bag (or two) for someone. In the box, include a cute magnetic grocery list. (Okay, so that's not homemade... but it could be if you make your own. Just google "make your own shopping list" and a bunch of ideas pop up.) If you canned any jam this year, add a little jar of jam to the box.

Earlier this year (prior to starting a blog), I came up with two different market bag patterns, each inspired by a different flower. I've used these bags to haul my groceries and produce home from the store, and they work well, hold a lot of food, and look pretty. :) I made both these bags using Peaches & Creme cotton yarn and a size I hook. It took just under 2 skeins (120 yards each) to make one bag.

Mum Market Bag

The first bag is the Mum Market Bag. This bag has a flower motif at the base, and then a leafy-petal design around the top edge.

Overall shape and design of the Mum Market Bag
Materials:
  • A bit less than 2 skeins Peaches & Creme Cotton yarn (120 yds per skein)
  • Size I or 5.5 mm crochet hook
Stitches Used:
  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • slst = slip stitch
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • dc 5 tog = double crochet 5 together*
  • dc 4 tog = double crochet 4 together**
Pattern:

Round 1: make magic ring, ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc), 11 hdc in magic ring, join with slst to top of ch 2 - 12 sts

Round 2: ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc,) 1 hdc in same st, 2 hdc in each st around, join with slst to top of ch 2 - 24 sts

Round 3: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), 4 dc in same st, *skip next two hdc, 5 dc in 3rd hdc from hook,* repeat * * around, join with slst to top of ch 3 - 8 clusters, 40 sts

Round 4: ch 2, dc 4 tog (ch 2 + dc4tog counts as 1st dc 5 tog), *ch 5, dc 5 tog,* repeat * * around, ch 5, join with slst to top of 1st dc 5 tog - 8 clusters, 48 sts

Round 5: ch 3, 8 dc in ch 5 space, *1 dc in top of dc5tog, 8 dc in ch 5 space,* repeat * * around, join with slst to top of ch 3 - 72 sts

Round 6: ch 1, sc in same st, ch 5, *skip next 2 dc, sc in 3rd dc from hook, ch 5,* repeat * * around, join with slst to top of 1st sc - 23 loops, note - this may not come out with perfect spacing...

Round 7: 2 sl st to top of next ch 5 space, ch 1, sc, ch 5, *sc in top of next chain 5 space, ch 5,* repeat * * around, join with slst to top of 1st sc

Rounds 8-21: repeat row 7

Round 22: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), 4 dc in same st, sc in next ch 5 space, *5 dc in next sc, sc in next ch 5 space,* repeat * * around, join with slst to top of ch 3

Round 23: ch 2, dc 4 tog (counts as first dc 5 tog), ch 5, *skip sc, dc 5 tog, ch 5,* repeat * * around, join with slst to top of 1st dc 5 tog

Round 24: ch 2, hdc in same st, 2 hdc in ch 5 space, *hdc in top of dc 5 tog, 2 hdc in next ch 5 space,* join with slst to top of 1st hdc

Round 25: ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in each st around, join with slst to top of 1st hdc

Round 26 & 27: repeat round 25

Strap: *ch 1, 8 hdc, turn,* repeat * * 35 times, join with slst to opposite side of purse, break yarn, weave in ends.

Stitch "How-To":

*How to dc 5 together: yarn over (yo), insert hook into next stitch, yo, pull yarn through stitch (3 loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through 1st two loops on hook, pause (you should have 2 loops left on your hook);

yo, insert hook into next stitch, yo, pull yarn through stitch (4 loops on hook), you, pull yarn through 1st two loops on hook, pause (you should have 3 loops left on your hook

Repeat this until you have completed five partial dc (I like to think of it as the “bottom half” of the stitches)

At this point, you should have 6 loops on your hook, yo, pull yarn through all six loops, you can “lock it” in place with a sc… or in this pattern, just move on to the next ch 5…

**To dc 4 together do the same as described for the dc 5 together stitch, only instead of five partial dc, you will have only four, and instead of ending up with 6 loops on your hook, you will only have five…

Zinnia Market Bag

The second bag is the Zinnia Market Bag. I think I prefer the overall shape of this bag over the Mum bag, but the design is very pretty, as well.

  3. Emily--

I just finished my Zinnia Market Bag in orange. Thank you for the lovely pattern. Would you suggest blocking this bag or is it not necessary?

    1. Your welcome! I enjoyed designing it. Orange is such a fun summery color, too!

I didn't block my Zinnia bag. Here are a few things to consider: The mesh of the bag is stretchy. The kind of yarn you use will change the look of the bag a little bit; I used a cotton yarn.

If you were going to line the bag, it might be a good idea to block it, since the yarn won't stretch as much and the pattern would be even more emphasized.

      Hope this helps!

    1. I haven't made a video tutorial. It's possible someone might (or you can!) with the way the creative commons licensing works. Enjoy!
